Richards Bay and University of Pretoria ended the weekend level on points as the race for the GladAfrica Championship crown heats up, while Jomo Cosmos were relegated to the ABC Motsepe league.

The log leaders faced Uthongathi at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday, as the tie ended in an eventual 2-2 stalemate. Richards Bay were awarded a penalty 20 minutes into the game as Sakhile Hlongwa calmly sent the goalkeeper the other way.

Siyanda Dlamini equalised for the Cane Cutters moments later, while in the 50th minute of the tie, Nkosikhona Dube put his side ahead via the penalty spot. As Richards bay fought back, Hlongwa completed his brace just after the hour mark, as the game ended two goals a piece.

While Richards Bay dropped points, the University of Pretoria capitalised with a 1-0 win over Venda Football Academy at the Tuks Stadium. After 28 games played, Richards Bay and Tuks share a near identical record at the top of the log with goal difference separating the two sides.

Elsewhere, Platinum City Rovers and Free State Stars played to a 2-2 draw at the Olen Park Stadium as they occupy the 7th and 8th spot on the log respectively.

In what was news that made waves in local football this weekend, Jomo Cosmos were relegated from the GladAfrica Championship after their 1-1 draw against TS Sporting at the Tsakane Stadium on Saturday. Jomo Sono’s men needed to avoid a draw or a loss to keep their hopes alive at staying in the division, however it was not to be for the popular South African side.

Cosmos were relegated from top flight football in 2016 and haven’t returned since, as Ezenkosi drop from the professional ranks of South African football.

On Sunday, Hungry Lions put their recent spell of bad results behind them with an impressive display against JDR Stars, a side looking to finish in a promotion playoff spot. At the Thohoyandou Stadium
